When she was told the news of her husband’s death, she locked herself in her room and from the window she found so many freedoms she didn’t enjoy and care before. Then she hoped to be free and reborn. When her husbands returned by the wrong news of the accident, she was killed by the joy and a sense of liberation. In this story, the author used some literary elements, such as similes, irony, and personification. These elements make readers feel the emotion of the character well. From this story, I understand that sometimes when we would lose something, we just found its fine place. However, it’s always too late for us.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />

Unsatisfied with the current situation, Kate Chopin, the author of “The Story of an Hour”, often wrote stories about women in a way that was considered inappropriate in relation to this century’s strict views upon marriage, sexual liberation and so on. In “The Story of an Hour” the subject can be women’s position in marriage in the late <st1:chmetcnv w:st="on" TCSC="0" NumberType="1" Negative="False" HasSpace="False" SourceValue="1800" UnitName="’">1800’</st1:chmetcnv>s, and Kate Chopin may in some way represent herself through the heroine’s voice. Her views upon marriage as an institution and the unfair and oppressive position women dealt with then might be the theme. The story happens in the same house, which is the cage confining Mrs. Mallard. And the whole article focuses on the philosophic change of Mrs. Mallard, from sorrow to joy out of freedom. However, her dream is cracked into pieces by the return of Mr. Mallard. She knew what she had been waited for a long time has come but she didn’t know what it was and didn’t know what to do for a moment. When she found it was “freedom” what she had been longed for “the vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes.” She felt her life was in her own hands and her own life now just begun and her future was full of hope. As a woman her will and ability has been repressed by her husband and the society for many years. What’s more she was imposed to accept other’s will, her ego was repressed. But after her husband’s death she was free. In the story she kept whispering “Free! Body and soul free.” But when she wanted to celebrate this she found her husband was alive without any injure. Her dream broke and died. The doctor said she was dead of joy but I thought she was killed by the disappointment since her husband didn’t die and she had to lead to life full of repression. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />
